Sleep apnea is a serious health condition that has the potential to significantly affect both your overall wellbeing and your daily quality of life! What are some factors that might be worsening your sleep apnea, and what can you do to minimize their impact? This blog post explains.

Your Weight

According to one estimate, around 70% of sleep apnea patients are obese. That is because fatty tissue on the neck and abdomen can interfere with airway function. If you are carrying some extra weight, a reasonable diet and exercise plan may help you to slim down a little and reduce your sleep apnea symptoms.

Your Sleeping Position

If you sleep on your back, gravity is working against you. It can pull loose tissues downward, making it more likely that you will suffer from breathing obstructions. Many patients breathe better when they sleep on their side. If you find side-sleeping to be uncomfortable, you could try sleeping at a slight incline instead.

Alcohol and Caffeine Consumption

Alcohol can cause the muscles throughout your body to overrelax, which can increase the risk of breathing disruptions. If you choose to drink, it is best to do so in moderation and have your last sip a few hours before bedtime.

Caffeine can also affect sleep quality. Try to have your last cup of coffee before noon.

Your Age

Sleep apnea is more common among older individuals than it is among young people. While you cannot control your age, you can do your best to stick to a healthy lifestyle. Managing your overall wellness by sticking to a good diet, remaining physically active, and making other good choices may help you enjoy high-quality sleep.

Smoking

Smoking irritates the upper airway and can increase the likelihood of breathing problems during sleep. If you smoke, it would be wise to talk to your doctor about strategies that can help you quit. At the very least, consider cutting back on the number of cigarettes you smoke each day.
